TREATMENT OF VAGINAL INTRAEPITHELIAL NEOPLASIA (VAIN) IN AYURVEDA

Vaginal Intraepithelial Neoplasia (VAIN) is a rare condition and can affect the women of any age but it is commonly seen in women over 50 years of age.

In this condition, there are dysplastic changes to the epithelium of the vaginal mucosa and like the cervical neoplasia, it is diagnosed in levels such as level 1, level 2 and level 3 depending upon the depth of the involvement in the epithelial layer by dysplastic cells. It is a condition characterized by changes in the skin of vagina. For some women, this condition is temporary and goes away naturally but in some cases, changes can be more severe and there is a chance that cancer may develop after many years of having VAIN.

It may occur in just one area i.e. towards the neck of the womb (cervix) or may be multifocal that means it may effect several different areas of vagina at once.

What Are The Causes Of Vaginal Intraepithelial Neoplasia (VAIN)?

The causes of VAIN are not fully understood but the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) can be one of the cause along with the other causes that weaken the immune system.

HPV is the most common infection in sexually active females. There are over 100 types of HPV but the types 16 and 18 are most common and are responsible for causing the VAIN. However, HPV alone is not the only cause of VAIN, Other factors that weakens the body’s immune system are also the possible causes of VAIN.

What Are The Symptoms Of VAIN?

There are no symptoms of VAIN. Most of the women are diagnosed when they are undergoing tests for other disorders. It is usually diagnosed by a cervical smear test.

How VAIN Is Diagnosed?

VAIN cannot be diagnosed by physical examination as the abnormal cells cannot be seen with naked eye.

VAIN can be detected by the presence of abnormal cells in the Pap smear test which is later confirmed by colposcopy which is done to see the cells of vagina more clearly.

What Is The Treatment Of VAIN?

According to modern medicine, diathermy treatment is given to remove the abnormal cells or surgery is recommended to remove that area of the tissue or vaginectomy is done.
