There are various dreadful diseases that are hunting mankind and sexually transmitted diseases are also increasing rapidly. Syphilis is one of the most life-threatening sexually transmitted diseases because it may cause serious health complications like blindness, deafness, neurosyphilis (damage to the nervous system) and damage to the bone if left untreated.<\/p>\r\n

\"Syphilis<\/p>\r\n

Syphilis is mainly a bacterial infection, which starts as a painless sore, typically on your genitals, rectum or mouth. The syphilis bacteria can remain inactive (dormant) in your body after the initial infection, before becoming active again. Early syphilis can be treated. Syphilis can also be passed from mothers to unborn child at the time of delivery if the mother is suffering from the same.<\/p>\r\n

Causes Of Syphilis<\/h2>\r\n

Causative agent of Syphilis is a bacterium called Treponema pallidum. The most common route of transmission is through sexual contact with an infected person and minor cuts or abrasions in your skin or mucous membranes. Syphilis may rarely spread through kissing or infected mothers to their babies during pregnancy or childbirth. Syphilis can’t be spread by using the same clothing or eating utensils, or from doorknobs, swimming pools or hot tubs.<\/p>\r\n

Clinical Features<\/h2>\r\n

Syphilis develops in stages, and symptoms vary with each stage. Stages can be –<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

Primary Syphilis<\/h3>\r\n

A small sore, called a chancre (SHANG-kur) appears at the spot where the bacteria entered your body. Most people infected with syphilis develop only one chancre, some people develop more than one. The chancre usually is painless and may develop about three weeks after exposure; it may heal on its own within three to six weeks.<\/p>\r\n

Secondary Syphilis<\/h3>\r\n

Within a few weeks of the original chancre healing, a rash begins on your trunk but later covers your entire body, including the palms of your hands and the soles of your feet. This rash may be accompanied by wart like sores in your mouth or genital area. Some people muscle\u2019s aches, a fever, a sore throat and swollen lymph nodes, which may disappear within few weeks.<\/p>\r\n

Latent Syphilis<\/h3>\r\n

The disease moves from the secondary stage to the hidden (latent) stage, if you are treated for syphilis which shows no symptoms. The latent stage can last for years and may progress to the third (tertiary) stage.<\/p>\r\n

Tertiary Syphilis<\/h3>\r\n

People who don’t get treatment for the Syphilis, may develop complications known as late (tertiary) syphilis. In this stage it may damage your brain, heart, blood vessels, nerves, eyes, liver, bones and joints.<\/p>\r\n

Congenital Syphilis <\/strong><\/h3>\r\n

If the mother is having syphilis at the time of delivery then she can infect the baby through the placenta. Most have no symptoms, but some may experience a rash on the palms of hands and the soles of their feet. Later, it can lead to deafness, teeth deformities and saddle nose.<\/p>\r\n

Neurosyphilis<\/h3>\r\n

Syphilis can spread and can damage your brain, nervous system (neurosyphilis) and the eye (ocular syphilis).<\/p>\r\n
