What are the causes of Nocturnal Emission?

(Reference: Charak Chikitsa Sthanam, 30/135)
The causes of Shukra dhatu vikaras are very well explained in Charak Samhita. In nocturanl emission, there is mainly involvement of two main doshas that is VATA and PITTA. When a person indulges in excessive sexual activities like excessive masturbation, excessive sexual activities, unnatural sex, improper food habits, eating excessive dry, spicy, salty, sour, hot food, those persons who always want to stay in women company, people who always stay in fear, anger, anxiety which increase the heat in the body and destroy the soumya (cool) guna of shukra dhatu which leads to its vitiation. Holding natural urges also vitiate the doshas- like holding the urge of urine, sleep, hunger etc. Sleeping late in the night leads to vata vitiation in the body which leads to improper functioning of body parts, poor nerve control, poor thinking and logical power. In nocturnal emission there is specifically involvement of APANA VAYU AND VYANA VAYU along with vitiation of PITTA dosha. In today’s time, involvement of young generation in excessive sexual activities, excessive masturbation, watching porn and sexual content online is common which is associated with consumption of wrong diet such as consumption of excessive junk food, cold and soft drinks, fried, spicy food, late night sleep. All this factors lead to sexual weakness in body like nocturnal emission, erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation etc.
With above mentioned causes, Vata and Pitta doshas get aggravated in the body and show their effects according to their nature on human body. Vitiated vata dosha weakens our nerve and muscle control and aggravated Apana vayu vitiates reproductive organs and their proper functioning which leads to poor production of Shukra dhatu and leads to weakness in the body.
As Pitta vitiation is also there which is due to improper dietary habits that lead to increase of heat in the body. This increased heat decreases the soumya guna of Shukra dhatu makes it thin in nature. It also increases paleness and foul smell in shukra dhatu. Which leads to its ejaculation very easily.Frequent urination and its yellowness indicates increased pitta and its presence in urogenital tract. In nocturnal emission one has to make sure that bowels are always clear as constipation is one of the major causes for nocturnal emission. If stool(toxins) remains in the colon or rectum for longer time, it will increase the pitta or heat in that area and also exerts pressure on the seminal sac, which facilitates the excretion of semen.
