How to Treat Infertility through Ayurveda?

Most people will have a strong desire to conceive a child during their lifetime. Many of the couples (approximately 85%) will achieve pregnancy within one year of trying, with the greatest likelihood of conception occurring during the earlier months. Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive within 12 months without the use of birth control. Infertility can be either primary or secondary. Primary infertility refers to as a delay for a couple who have had no previous pregnancies and secondary infertility is a delay for a couple who has conceived at least once, although the pregnancy may not have been successful and now is unable to conceive. Several problems may arise such as miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy.

As per Ayurveda Aspect:

Female with vatika (vata dosha) constitution follows vata-aggravating diet and life style, the vata dosha gets aggravated that produces piercing pain, stiffness, hardness and numbness in vagina and exhaustion. Due to this dosha, the discharge may be painful, thin frothy and rough.

It is correlated to vandhyatva and it is described in Ayurvedic classics in different forms such as apraja, vandhya, sapraja. The most vitiated Dosha is the Vata which causes functional defects in the egg and there are difficulties with implantation which is often responsible for infertility.

What are the Causes of Infertility?

Both males and females are equally responsible for the causes of infertility. Most of the infertile couples have three major causes including a malefactor, ovulatory dysfunction, or tubal-peritoneal disease.

Causes of Female Infertility

Causes of female infertility are divided into three categories, including defective ovulation, transport, and implantation.

Defective ovulation includes physical disorders such as obesity, anorexia, and excessive exercise and all these factors may lead to overweight and malnutrition. Ovarian disorders on which there is an increased amount of testosterone and LH. Endometriosis is also the main factor in infertility. It refers to a condition in which sections of the lining of uterus implants in the ovaries, vagina, fallopian tubes or pelvis. This implantation forms fluid-filled cysts that grow with each menstrual cycle, and by the time they eventually turn into blisters and scars. These scars then block the passage of the egg and delay pregnancy.

Causes of Male Infertility

Causes of male infertility are divided into three main categories:-

1. Defective Spermatogenesis

Due to the endocrine disorders such as diabetes mellitus and hyperthyroidism there is the formation of faulty sperms that are unable to fertilize the ovum.

2. Defective Transport

Presence of several endocrine disorders such as diabetes mellitus and hyperthyroidism and the formation of faulty sperms that is not capable of fertilization.

3. Ineffective Delivery

Many psychosexual disorders like ejaculatory dysfunction, impotency, physical disability can affect the fertility of males.

What are the Symptoms of Infertility in Women?

The changes can be seen in women during their puberty as changes in the menstrual cycle and ovulation may be are the symptoms of infertility in women. Symptoms include:

  • No menstruation or the periods may suddenly stop.
  • The periods may be irregular. The number of days between each period varies every month.
  • Abnormal menstruation. The bleeding is heavier or lighter than usual during periods.
  • The periods may be painful. There may be pelvic pain and cramping may happen.

Sometimes, in female fertility, there is a relation of imbalance of hormones. In this case, symptoms can also include :-

  1. Gaining weight
  2. Changes in sex desire
  3. Thinning of hairs or there may be hair loss
  4. Growing of dark hairs on the chin, lips, and chest
  5. Changes in the skin, including acne
  6. Pain during intercourse

What are the Symptoms of Infertility in Men?

Symptoms of male infertility can be indefinite. The symptoms may be unnoticed until a man tries to have a baby.

Symptoms include :-

  • Problems with ejaculation and erections.
  • Pain and swelling in the testicles.
  • Changes in hair growth.
  • Changes in intercourse desire.
  • Testicles may be small and firm.
