How to Treat Trigeminal Neuralgia Pain Naturally
Trigeminal neuralgia – also known as TIC DOULOUREUX, is a painful, chronic condition involving the trigeminal nerve.
There are two separate trigeminal nerves, one on each side of the face. These nerves are responsible for carrying the sensation of pain and other sensation from face to brain

The pain can be brought on by mild stimulation of the face, such as brushing teeth or shaving. TN may initially have short, mild attacks but over the time patients may experience longer, a more frequent bout of severe pain. Trigeminal neuralgia affects women more often than men. In some cases, the condition becomes progressive and pain is always present. There are treatments available to alleviate the debilitating pain but trigeminal neuralgia cannot always be cured.
Classification
Trigeminal neuralgia is broadly classified into four types :
- Trigeminal neuralgia: In this condition, the pain from TN travels to other parts of the face through the brain.
- Glossopharyngeal neuralgia: Very uncommon and the pain is felt on the throat and neck.
- Occipital neuralgia: In this condition, the pain is in the neck and at
base of the skull due to the inflammation and injury in the nerves which run from scalp to spinal cord. Prostherpetic neuralgia: The complication is due to the viral infection characterized by blisters and painful rashes.
Prevalence and Incidence
It is reported that 150000 people are diagnosed with trigeminal neuralgia every year. While the disorder can occur at any age, it is more common with the people over the age of 50.
Hypertension and multiple sclerosis also are
Causes
The pain associated with trigeminal neuralgia represents an irritation of the nerve. The cause of the pain usually is due to contact between a healthy artery or vein and the trigeminal nerve at the base of the skull. This places pressure on the nerve as it enters the brain and causes the nerve to misfire.
In many cases, the cause of trigeminal neuralgia is unknown and causes include
- Enlarged blood vessel or tumor that pressured the nerve
- ultiple sclerosis, a condition that damages the myelin sheath, which is the protective coating around nerves.
Triggers
A variety of triggers may set off the pain of trigeminal neuralgia, including
- Shaving
- Touching face
- Eating
- Drinking
- Brushing
- Talking
- Putting on Makeup
- Encountering Breeze
- Smiling
- Washing Face

How Trigeminal Neuralgia is Diagnosed?
- There’s no single test that your doctor can prescribe which help them to diagnose trigeminal neuralgia. The diagnose will depend on the type and location of the pain and factors that trigger the pain.
- Your doctor will first evaluate your medical history and perform a physical exam. This will include a neurological exam to determine which part of the trigeminal nerve is being affected. Doctor will touch various parts of your face to determine the location of the pain.
- Your doctor may conduct many tests to diagnose trigeminal neuralgia and determine underlying causes for your condition, including
Neurological Examination
- Your doctor determines exactly where the pain is occurring by touch or examination of a face and if you appear to have trigeminal neuralgia -which branches of the trigeminal nerve may be affected.
- Reflex tests can also help your doctor to determine if symptoms are caused by a compressed nerve or another condition.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI):
If multiple sclerosis or tumor is causing trigeminal neuralgia, a physician will determine it by MRI. In some cases, your doctor may inject a dye into a blood vessel to view the arteries and veins and highlight blood flow (magnetic resonance angiogram).
