How to slow down your metabolism
Introduction
Metabolism is the life-sustaining chemical reaction in the body by which the body converts food into energy. During this process, these foods are combined with oxygen and release the energy according to the body’s need to function properly. :
There are three stages of metabolism which includes :
1. Stage 1
- In this stage, nutrients are digested into absorbable units, into the blood and tissues.
2. Stage 2:
There are two sub-stages
- a) Stage 2 anabolism: Transformation of nutrients into macromolecules.
- b) Stage 2 catabolism: Breakdown of nutrients into pyruvic acid.
3.Stage 3:
- There is a release of CO2 and a combination of oxygen with glucose and there is a release of energy.
- In thin and skinny people, slow metabolism will help them to gain weight in a natural way.
Here are some natural ways which are helpful to slow down the metabolism:
Proper diet
- Proper intake of complex carbohydrates than simple carbohydrates can slow down the metabolism. These carbohydrates are found in foods such as whole grains, peas, potatoes, beans, dairy products and vegetables which are digested at a very slow rate and slow down the body’s metabolism.
Nuts and seeds:
- Nuts and seeds are the rich source of unsaturated fats and contain high-calorie content. They also contain an amino acid called arginine which is responsible for the formation of nitric acid in the body. Nitric acid slows down the metabolic rate in the body. It also improves immunity and promotes restorative sleep.
Calories:
- Consumption of high calories diet such as butter, honey, whole milk, yogurt, milkshakes etc are helpful in slow down the metabolism. Intake of this diet helps in maintaining the muscle mass and keeps you healthy.
Home Remedies to slow down the metabolism:
- 1. Banana is a rich source of various vitamins and minerals. Having a banana with milk or banana shake is very helpful thus slowing down the metabolism of the body.
- 2. Soak 2 to 3 figs in water for some time and mash them in the same water and consume them in the evening.
- 3. Soak 2 to 3 dates in water for few hours and then mash them in the same water and consume them.
To slow down the metabolism, it is necessary to maintain proper lifestyle.
1. Keep yourself warm:
- Wearing warm clothes helps in slowing down the metabolism because heat loss is the main energy drain in the body. When the body is cold there is an increasing level of uncoupling of proteins in the body that interfere with the ATP production and results in heat formation instead of useful energy from food.
2. Proper sleep:
- Get proper sleep which is helpful in slowing down the metabolism. During sleep, the metabolism declines and stays for some time till you are awake. Try to sleep after a long walk distance because long walk speeds up the metabolism and burns about 100 calories. Sleeping after the intake of lunch can also slow down the metabolism.
3. Avoid stress:
- Stress is the main cause of fast metabolism because during stress there is a release of thyroxin and adrenaline which directly affects the metabolism.
4. Prolonged sitting:
- Sitting for a long time after having heavy meals is also very helpful in lowering the metabolism of the body. Take a gap in between the meals i.e., try to avoid frequent meals or snacks and condense it into two or three large meals.
5. Exercise:
- Avoid fast exercises because these exercises burn hundreds of calories and speed up metabolism. Do mild exercises that will help to build the muscle mass.
- Do exercises at lower intensities for a short period of time. Reduce heavy walk and add weight training exercise schedule which is also very helpful in build up muscles.

- Breathing exercises: Breathing exercises help in reducing stress and provides relaxation to mind which induces sleep and keeps you healthy.
- Chanderbhed pranayama: This pranayama enhances both physical and mental strength. It is also very helpful in slowing down the metabolism and helps in gaining weight.
