How Ayurveda Can Help in Chickenpox ?

Chickenpox is an acute contagious viral disease caused by varicella zoster virus.  It usually affects children, particularly between the ages of 1-10 years. Though it has a superficial resemblance to smallpox, it is an entirely different disease and less severe.

But the good news is that chickenpox is a common illness for kids and most people get better by just resting as you do with a cold or the flu. Once you are infected, you will develop immunity against the virus for your life after getting infected.

Cause of Chickenpox (Laghu Masurika):

Chickenpox is caused by a virus called varicella-zoster.

Chickenpox spreads from an infected person to the children by direct contact or by droplets expelled while coughing, sneezing and breathing into the air.

In Ayurvedic terms, laghu masurika or chicken pox is caused by the vitiation of all 3 doshas:

  • Vata
  • Pitta
  • Kappa

Signs and Symptoms of Chickenpox:

It may start out seeming like cold: you might have a runny or stuffy nose, and a caught. But 1to 2 days later, the rash appears, often in bunches of the spot, on chest and face.

It can spread out quickly over the entire body. Sometimes, the rash is even seen in ears and mouth.

The chicken pox blisters are different for everyone.  Some people get just a few bumps and others are covered from head to toe.

  • fever
  • low appetite
  • headache
  • body pain
  • Red rashes which are converted into fluid-filled vesicles.
  • Vesicles burst and heal
  • tiredness and ill feeling

Complication:

Though chickenpox is very common, however in few cases,  it may happen that the virus may spread to other sites or a superimposed bacterial infection takes place.

The complications associated with chicken pox are as follows:

  • bacterial infection
  • pneumonia
  • toxic shock syndrome
  • dehydration
  • ramsay hunt syndrome
  • bells palsy
  • postherpetic neuralgia
  • Reye’s syndrome
  • inflammation of the brain

DIET:

  • Include soft and easy to swallow meals
  • avoid purgatives and citrus fruits
  • coriander and carrot soup
  • fresh juices and raw vegetables
  • eat curd, buttermilk

LIFESTYLE:

  • While there is an infection, stay at home.
  • Avoid scratching the blisters because of the risk of infection.
  • Wear light, loose clothes to avoid skin irritation
  • Long sleeves and covering full parts of the body can help to discourage scratching.

Ayurvedic Management of Chickenpox:

Trim the nails of your children and prevent them from scratching the rashes.

  • Smear honey for the blisters in the mouth.
  • Boil turmeric and neem leaves in bathing water and take bath in lukewarm water.
  • A hot water bath should be avoided.
  • You can apply neem leaves paste, aloe vera gel, and turmeric to reduce itching and heal the blisters.
  • Take easily and light digestible food like softly cooked rice, gruel, barley water, moong dal soup, etc. Avoid spicy and oily foods.
  • Avoid sending children to school or outside.
  • Let them wear light, loose cotton clothes. Wash the clothes well with an antiseptic solution.
  • Boil dry ginger powder coriander seeds, musta, Tulsi in water and give it for drinking a few sips every one hour.
  • To reduce itching you can give lukewarm water and haridra khanda twice a day.
  • Sudarshana churna, Guduchi will help in managing fever.
